REGINA – A community group visited Regina’s landfill Sunday morning to take home bricks from the recently demolished Ecole Connaught Community School.
“It is a precious memento, but also, more importantly than that it’s the principles of reuse and recycling,” said Trish Elliott, a member of the Save Our Connaught group.
The bricks will be used in community projects, including benches, planters and maybe some artistic projects. Eventually, members of the public will be able to take a few for their homes and gardens.
Elliott said an anonymous worker sent the group a photo of the debris at the landfill. The group then asked the City of Regina if members could take some of the bricks, to which the city respond in a “very supportive” manner.
A city employee at the gate of the landfill on Sunday said news outlets were not allowed inside, but video sent to Global News from Elliott showed about a dozen people in reflective vests wearing bike helmets and hardhats collecting the bricks.
Community members tried to save the school from being demolished but lost the battle. A new school is expected to be constructed in about two years.
