Calgary mom angry and frightened after abduction charges dropped

A Calgary mom is angry and frightened after the man who abducted her baby had the charges against him dropped.

Last June, Cruz, who is now just over a year old, was taken from his mother, Miranda Billing.

“Everything was so dark, my whole world was gone. – I didn’t know if i would ever see him again,” said Billing.

The boy’s biological father Christian Jovanovic had grabbed the child from his mother in a northeast parking lot.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

At the time the couple was involved in an ongoing custody battle.

The ordeal prompted a province-wide amber alert.

After nine hours the baby was returned unharmed.

Billing can’t understand why charges against her ex have been dropped.

“I think it’s completely unfair he can walk away like nothing happened, and get a slap on the wrist – and I am left here traumatized,” she said.

“I don’t let this kid out of my sight.. it’s completely unfair.”

Miranda says Jovanovic had made threats he was going to take their baby out of the country and never come back.

The crown prosecutor’s office says charges were dropped because there was no reasonable likelihood of a conviction.

An emergency protection order in which Jovanovic is to have no contact with his son remains in place.
