HALIFAX – Two city councillors are in the running to replace outgoing Deputy Mayor Darren Fisher.
Linda Mosher (Halifax West Armdale) and Lorelei Nicoll (Cole Harbour – Westphal) both told Global News they have both thrown their names into the race. City councillors will vote for the new deputy mayor at Tuesday’s regional council meeting.
Mosher has sat on council since 2000, while Nicoll has sat on council since 2008.
The deputy mayor position is a one-year term, and comes with a salary increase of $7,877.66. The rules don’t stop Fisher from running for deputy mayor again but Brendan Elliott, a senior communications advisor with the city, said that hasn’t been the practice.
Fisher was recently nominated as the Federal Liberal Party candidate for Dartmouth-Cole Harbour. City rules allow him to stay on as councillor during his bid to become an MP.
Fisher said his tenure as deputy mayor has been one of the best years of his life, his term ends November 18.
Councillors and Mayor Mike Savage will vote for the deputy mayor in a secret ballot Tuesday afternoon.
