KELOWNA – Canada’s Department of National Defence confirms all Cadet and Junior Canadian Ranger activities have been temporarily stopped after a soldier was shot and killed at the National War Memorial in Ottawa Wednesday.
“In light of recent events, direction has been issued by the Chief of Reserves and Cadets to temporarily cease Cadet and Junior Canadian Ranger activities nationwide as a precautionary measure,” said Daniel Blouin, a communications advisor for the DND.ED STORIES
“While there is no indication that Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers are at risk themselves, we are taking these precautions to ensure the safety of the youth entrusted in our care.
“We will continue to monitor this situation and provide further information and additional direction as soon as possible.
The safety and welfare of Cadets, Junior Canadian Rangers and their leaders remains our greatest concern and top priority,” Blouin explains.
UBC Okanagan student and Sea Cadet officer, Jade Cowan was following the news out of Ottawa on Wednesday but she says she didn’t think it would impact her directly, until she got an e mail saying it would.
“I saw the e mail and he said all cadet functions are cancelled due to the shooting that happened in Ottawa,” says Cowan.
Cowan says cadets had training planned at the Vernon Military camp this weekend, which has also been cancelled.
