EDMONTON – The flags at the Alberta Legislature have been lowered for Thursday and Friday to honour the Canadian soldiers killed in Quebec and Ottawa.

“In recognition of the tragic loss of Canadian Forces soldiers in recent attacks in Ottawa and Saint-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, Quebec, the flags at the Alberta Legislature will fly at half-mast on October 23 and 24,” a news release from the province read.

The premier has also asked that the flags at Government House and the Alberta Sheriff’s Training Academy in Edmonton, the McDougal Centre in Calgary, and provincial correctional facilities across Alberta be lowered.

All tours at the Legislature were cancelled again on Thursday.

“Our hearts go out to the family of the young soldier who was killed,” said Premier Jim Prentice on Wednesday.

“Minister Denis will meet with the law enforcement authorities and get their assessment, the sheriff’s office, and have an assessment of what needs to be done. Certainly we will take all measures to make sure that the buildings are safe and that the public is safe.”

Only those with confirmed meetings at the provincial building will be allowed entry.

A small memorial had been set up outside Edmonton City Hall on Thursday morning.

Veterans also stood post at the cenotaph to honour the fallen soldiers.
