Security heightened at Manitoba legislature after Ottawa shooting

WINNIPEG – Security has been heightened at the Manitoba legislature as a result of the shooting Wednesday at Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

Winnipeg police cruisers are stationed outside the legislative building on Broadway in Winnipeg.

A political staffer at the legislature told Global News that legislature security officers told him extra security measures are being taken but the building has not been locked down and is still accessible to the public.

Employees at federal government offices in downtown Winnipeg have also been told to keep their identification on them and visible at all times, although there was no threat to western region offices.

Police in Ottawa are searching for suspects after a Canadian soldier was shot at the War Memorial on Wednesday morning. Multiple shots were fired inside the Parliament buildings as well. Police have yet to confirm how many suspects were armed.

According to one witness, a suspect with a gun who was seen at the War Memorial had black hair and was wearing a grey jacket and scarf.

Winnipeg MP Kevin Lamoureux told Global News he heard shots fired one floor up from a caucus meeting in the Parliament centre block.
