WINNIPEG – Manitoba Bisons’ quarterback Jordan Yantz is recovering from a concussion sustained Friday night in the Herd’s win over the University of Saskatchewan but he’s already told his coach he wants to play this week. Yantz was injured in the second quarter when a defender’s leg came into contact with his head as he was falling down. Yantz left the game and did not return.

“We knew he was dinged in the game,” said Bisons’ head coach Brian Dobie. “It was quite disconcerting. To this point in time, we’re going through our whole protocol with that. We won’t know for a little while. We certainly are not going to play him until he’s cleared whenever that would be whether it’s this week or next week or whatever the situation is.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Yantz is currently second in the Canada West conference in passing with 1,610 yards and third in touchdown passes with 10. But with just two games left in the regular season the Bisons are looking at the big picture when it comes to both the football team and their players health: “I was talking to him late Saturday night,” said Dobie. “He sounded great and of course he was adamant he was playing this week. And I made it very clear he’ll play if he is cleared and only if he is 100 per cent cleared. Part of our responsibility is to protect. These athletes want to play. They want to compete. Protect them from themselves is really what part of our responsibility is.”
