CALGARY – City officials will unveil a proposal to beautify one of the city’s most popular roadways on Friday.
A redevelopment plan for Macleod Trail will be presented to council’s transportation committee.
The proposal will go before a city committee, as they discuss turning Macleod Trail into an urban boulevard.
What is an urban boulevard?
It means wider sidewalks, a separate bike lane, in addition to more trees and green spaces to line the thoroughfare.
The idea is to add some character to the car-dominated roadway, making it more appealing and safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
However, the redevelopment would come with a hefty price tag.
It’s estimated the project would cost about $99 million for the redesign between 25th Avenue and Anderson Road S.W., and between $20 and $100 million for land acquisitions to widen the roadway.
While it’s laid out as a 25 year project, some councillors fear it could take more like 100 years before it actually comes to fruition.
They say it’s unlikely to be a priority item, but approving the idea would mean they can start building around the plan and acquiring land as it becomes available.
