TORONTO – Councillor Doug Ford says he’s following the rules and sees nothing wrong with having Toronto taxpayers pay back a portion of the money supporters donate to his campaign at fundraising events.
“That’s the way the system works and maybe they should change the system to make it in line with the province and the federal government,” Ford told reporters at his campaign headquarters Thursday morning.
“We’re under the thumb of the province. They make the rules. I go by the rules and stick by the rules.”
Flyers were distributed recently advertising two upcoming $300 per person fundraising events for Ford’s campaign with the promise of a $250 rebate from the city.
Under the Contribution Rebate Program, citizens are eligible to receive 75 per cent back on contributions made between $25 and $300.

“As John Tory and the elites are handing over $2500, he has more money than he knows what to do with,” Ford said. “78 per cent of my donors, donating last time, were under $300.”
“I don’t have the lobbyists. I don’t have the political insiders. I’m no indebted to anyone. I’m indebted to the people of Toronto.”
