Thousands of people are getting ready to pound the pavement in Vancouver this morning in the effort to cure breast cancer.

The annual Run For the Cure takes place in communities across Canada.

It raises millions of dollars for research and awareness campaigns around breast cancer.

Statistically, one in nine Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her life time.

An estimated 24,400 women in Canada will be diagnosed with breast cancer. An estimated 5,100 will die from it.

This is the 23rd annual run and thousands are expected to wear pink to show solidarity with breast cancer survivors and their families.

Participants will be walking or running the 1km or 5km route at Concord Pacific Place in Vancouver.

A number of road closures is already in effect.

  • Cambie Bridge off-ramp to Pacific Boulevard

7:30 am to 2 pm

  • Pacific Blvd. from Nelson to Abbott

8:30 am to 11 am

  • Expo Blvd, from Carrall to Quebec
  • Keefer, from Carrall to Columbia/Quebec
  • W 6th  Avenue from Quebec to Cambie
  • Abbott St. from  Expo Blvd to Pacific Blvd
  • Carrall St from Keefer to Pacific Blvd
  • Quebec Street from Keefer to 7th Ave
  • 2nd Ave, from Main to Ontario
  • Westbound Terminal Ave from Main to Quebec
  • Cambie Bridge on-ramp from West 2nd
  • Northbound Cambie St/Bridge from W Broadway to Expo Blvd
