Two seniors died in an accident on Main Street Thursday evening after the van their son was driving crashed into five parked cars.
A 38-year-old was driving his parents south on Main Street just before 8:30 p.m. when he crossed into the northbound lane.
The van went over the curb and eventually struck five vehicles, including a taxi.
There was nobody in the parked vehicles, but the driver’s parents – both of whom were on the passenger side – died.
The driver is 38 years old, the father was 82 and the mother was 74. Their names have not been released.
The Vancouver Police Department believe both victims were wearing seatbelts, and that alcohol is not a factor. They’re still determining what caused the crash.
“What we’re really looking at is the mechanical workings of this mini van, it’s over 20 years old and so we want to make sure it’s in good mechanical shape, that there wasn’t a mechanical problem that caused this incident,” Vancouver police Cst. Brian Montague said. “The other thing we’re going to look at is the medical condition of the driver.”
Police have spoken to the son and said they do not believe this was an incident involving distracted driving.
Traffic on Main Street between 49th and 50th Avenue was closed for several hours as the VPD Collision Investigation Unit continued their work.
