City of Saskatoon employee charged with DUI

SASKATOON – The City of Saskatoon’s Director of Human Resources, Marno McInnes, is making his way through court on a charge of driving under the influence (DUI).

McInnes is representing the City in negotiations with the public transit union, ATU 615.

McInnes has been employed at City Hall since 2013. He was charged with the DUI in December, 2013.

Having pleaded guilty to the charge previously, McInnes was not in court Thursday morning when his case was further discussed.

Lawyer Leslie Sullivan said McInnes opted for rehabilitation rather than time at the correctional centre.

“In his case, what he’s applied to do and is going to be able to do for his sentence, is spend some time at the Saskatchewan Impaired Driver Treatment Program in Prince Albert,” said Sullivan.

Sullivan calls the charge and sentence standard and routine.

“We’ve basically been adjourning this from time to time until there was a bed available and there now is” said Sullivan. McInnes is set to enter the three-week rehab program on Dec. 29.

This is McInnes’ second DUI. While living in British Columbia in 2009, McInnes was observed by an officer at an A&W drive-thru. A breathalyser test was administered, resulting in the charge. McInnes was found guilty. He appealed the charge, but it was denied.

According to the City of Saskatoon, Criminal Occurrence Security Checks and/or Vulnerable Sector Searches are completed prior to hiring employees who directly handle cash, enter private property or work with the vulnerable population.

A criminal record doesn’t eliminate an employee from being hired by the City. The City takes into account the nature of the offence, when it took place, and the relevance of the offence to the position being applied for.
