SASKATOON – After years of planning and fundraising, construction of the Children’s Hospital in Saskatchewan is officially underway in Saskatoon.
The official ground breaking ceremony took place Thursday morning with a shovel and hardhat, as Saskatchewan families dug their way into the history books.
“To the Saskatchewan families that face adversity every single day with such courage, this moment is for you,” said Brynn Boback-Lane, president of the Children’s Hospital Foundation.
The $250-million facility will have 176 beds and all will be in private patient rooms with space for family members to stay.
For one father, the new hospital should bring relief for families whose children are in hospital knowing they won’t have to go through what he did.
“You couldn’t overnight all the time with your kid. You couldn’t be there at all hours. The facilities can be more family friendly,” said Derek Gross.
Kids played a role in creating a family-friendly environment, providing input on designs and colours they thought would help make the hospital kid-friendly.
Construction of the main building should be completed in 2015 with the hospital completed in 2017.
Once open, Prince Edward Island will be the only province without a children’s hospital.
