Lululemon founder Chip Wilson paints over mural he commissioned last Oct.

VANCOUVER – Lululemon founder Chip Wilson has whitewashed the mural painted on the seawall behind his $37 million Point Grey home. He and his wife Shannon commissioned the $7,000 project last October in an effort to stop problem tagging in the area.

Seven well-known graffiti artists worked on the mural.

However, the mural has now been painted over and someone has written the words ‘The City of Vancouver: Consistently opposing the arts.’

It is not known who wrote those words but the City of Vancouver says it came to their attention that the mural may not have received a permit.

“The mural was unpermitted, so the City met with the property owner to see what could be done to bring the mural into compliance,” says the City of Vancouver in a statement. “Upon review, there were some sections of the mural that didn’t meet City requirements (particularly as related to the prevention of graffiti) and the property owner took it upon themselves to paint over those sections.

“The City remains in discussion with the property owner about the possibility of a City compliant mural in the future.”

The Wilsons’ backyard contains 200 feet of seawall, but it is adjacent to beachfront owned by the province and the City of Vancouver does require permits to be granted before work such as the mural can be carried out.

Just down from where the mural was painted, problem graffiti can be seen painted along the seawall.
