Better weather helps farmers with 2014 Saskatchewan harvest

REGINA – Better weather has helped farmers across Saskatchewan with the 2014 harvest but progress is slow going.

The weekly crop report says 23 per cent of the crop is combined, well behind the five-year average of 43 per cent.

Another 43 per cent is swathed or ready to straight-cut.

The report says the harvest is most advanced in the southwest region with 31 per cent combined while only 11 per cent is combined in the east-central region.

Of the crops in the bin, 71 per cent of field peas are estimated in the top two quality grades.

For lentils and durum, 61 per cent and 79 per cent respectively are estimated to fall within the bottom two quality grades.

Overall yields are reported to be average. Weather related issues remain a concern with last week’s frost causing minimal to severe damage in some later seeded crops.
