WINNIPEG- Thousands of Winnipeggers started their morning by running around the city to raise money for cancer research on the national Terry Fox run day.
“It’s very exciting to see everyone coming out to keep Terry’s dream alive,” said Jenny Zaparniuk of Terry Fox Foundation in Manitoba.
About 34 communities across the province participated in the 34th annual event, which aimed to raise more than the $650,000 raised last year. There was no entry fee or minimum donation required to run.
“Everyone can take something out of this run and it means something personal to them,” said James Follette, co-organizer of the Terry Fox run in Winnipeg at Assiniboine Park.
More than 600 communities across Canada were involved in the run Sunday. Last year around $27 millionwas raised nationally for cancer research. The Terry Fox foundation and event organizers are looking to raise even more money this year.
“It’s about people giving to people that they’ve lost and trying to save others in the future,” said Follette.
