KELOWNA, B.C. – They swiftly move across the rink in the background of any major ice skating event collecting bouquets and gifts for the stars; but who knew you had to qualify for this unique clean up job.
At Prospera Place Thursday, 24 young skaters auditioned for the opportunity to clear the ice of petals and posies at the Skate Canada international event in Kelowna at the end of October.
Only half of the group will qualify.
Kaitlyn Crerar, 13, has been practicing edges and turns for weeks.
“I don’t know what the judges will think so I’m nervous,” says Crerar of the audition.
Some of the qualifications including being tidy as they pick up items from the ice and hold good posture.
Those who become official flower retrievers will get to be backstage with international skating competitors.
Successful skaters will find out if they win the job next week.
