SASKATOON – Saskatoon’s John G. Diefenbaker International Airport experienced a power outage around noon on Wednesday.
The airport’s Manager of Customer and Terminal Services Maxine Montgomery says the outage was caused by an accident involving a power pole and was quickly fixed by SaskPower.
“It was somebody that ran into a power pole at the corner of 45th Street West and Airport Drive, or in the vicinity of where that construction project is going on, on the roadway,” said Montgomery.
She says it also resulted in an area north of the city losing power.
Travellers leaving or coming home were not inconvenienced.
“No it wouldn’t affect us, we go immediately to stand-by power with our generators and so all essential power continues, so it doesn’t affect any of the arrivals and departures,” said Montgomery.
“The only thing it affects is some of our retailers, their cash registers and their systems may not be on essential power so they are forced to do a temporary closure.”
The airport was on backup power for a little more than an hour.
Pre-screening for flights, washrooms and even the public address (PA) system were working throughout the outage.
