REGINA – A local barbershop is coming under fire for refusing women clients.

Ragged Ass Barbers located in Regina’s Cathedral neighbourhood is sticking to its guns when it comes to serving male clients only.

On Friday, about a dozen women called the shop for appointments in protest. It was part of an event organized through Facebook called “Barbershop Flash Mob.”

The event was initiated by a woman looking for a classic men’s hairstyle.

“If they said we only give men’s haircuts, that’s one thing – and I would say, ‘Well I do want a men’s hair cut. I have very short hair and I wanted a hard part, which is a traditional men’s haircut’, but it’s another to say we only give men’s haircuts to men,” explained Evie Ruddy, who added she will take her complaint to the Human Rights Commission.

Ragged Ass Barbers owner Craig Zamonsky declined an interview with Global News, but issued this statement: “Recently, we have had some questions and concerns surrounding our clientele service policy.  The Ragged Ass Barbers take pride in providing exceptional mens’ grooming services, for men.  We chose to model our shop after the time-honoured tradition of the classic barbershop because as barbers, we have dedicated our careers to men’s grooming services.  It certainly has never been our intention for this to offend nor discriminate – we have simply chosen to specialize in our industry.”
