NEAR LUMBY, B.C. – A large scale operation was able recover the body of a local man Thursday, which was inside a pick-up truck that plunged into the Shuswap River last month.
“That’s a very good thing for the family because they have been very anxious the last month and a half. So we are glad we can give them some closure.” says Cpl. Henry Proce with the Lumby RCMP.
On June 14th a witness reported seeing a truck drive off the road and into the river.
Crews had to wait until water levels went down before it was safe to attempt a recovery.
“At that time the flow rate was far too fast, the water was too high. We were unable to extract the vehicle or him,” says Proce.
The unusually large recovery operation on the Shuswap River Bridge involved an RCMP dive team, Vernon Search and Rescue, a tow truck and a crane.
They were able to locate the truck in the river, attach a line to it, tow it the surface and then use the crane to pull the pick-up to the road.
The body was still in the truck when it was pulled from the river.
Police say foul play was not involved and the B.C Coroners Service is now investigating.
