Small business venture born out of a simple plan to lose weight

SAINT JOHN – Johanne and Ivan McCullough never imagined their plan to lose a few pounds would turn into a small business.

Both on a mission to lose weight, Johanne and Ivan were feeling a little restricted by their low carbohydrate and sugar diet.

So, the two self-proclaimed foodies started looking for a little something to satisfy the sweet tooth.

“When we first started tasting them we though oh wow these are really good,” said Johanne McCullough, founder of Jozi Pops.

Inspired by the recent hot weather, they decided to whip up a batch of frozen homemade treats which are made primarily with fresh local produce.

“You want that desert and most deserts are all flours and carbs and sugars that’s where all the sweetness comes from and we just said there has got to be something different.” Ivan told Global News.

“This is all fruit,” he said. “It is all natural. There is no colour or preservatives [or] anything like that… and we don’t use white sugar.”

Ivan said the pops were an instant hit with their friends.

“We had our first batch and we were like oh my these are good these are really good, we could sell these.”

This past weekend the couple went to the Saint John Market to sell Johzi’s Pops to the masses.

Johanne admitted she had butterflies.

“You really put yourself out there when you are making a product and you are handing it to a person and are hoping they like it as much as you do,” she said.

It seems they did.

Their first day they sold more than $300 worth of product.

That may not sound like a lot, but it got both of their entrepreneurial juices flowing.

“We need more freezer space downstairs to amp up production and we are looking at getting bigger molds,” Ivan said.

But, Joanne dreams of taking the business to the streets.

“If we can take this mobile, I think that is where we would like to go,” she said.
