RIVERVIEW, N.B. – Four months ago, Betty Bevans of Riverview started a private weight loss journey that she took public.
Bevans once weighed over 700 lbs. She never imagined that she would become the poster girl for healthy living.
But her determination has inspired many and she is on her way to reaching her goals.
“I am 41 lbs lighter.”
From 425 lbs now down to 384. In the last four months, Bevans has come a long way.
“It lets you get in and out of vehicles easier, allows you to move easier,” she said in an interview with Global News. “And one of my favorites is to be able to go and sit in seats.”
Bevans sets mini goals for herself so she doesn’t get overwhelmed. She still has 135 lbs to lose.
“My first goal is to walk from here to the Chocolate River Station right up to the bridge and back.”
It’s only two kms, but for Bevans it feels like a marathon. Just a few years ago, she was barely able to move.
“At 720 lbs I could not get up from the couch to go to the kitchen to get something to eat so everyone waited on me.”
Bevans is getting her life back one step at a time. Four months ago she decided to go public with her journey. She issued a challenge to residents from Moncton, Riverview and Dieppe to record their healthy lifestyle changes for points through social media. In the end, Deputy Mayor of Riverview, Cecile Cassista says her town took top spot.
“When I look back and I see all the seniors getting involved walking, drinking water taking the challenge and voting daily that inspired me,” Cassista said.
Along the way, Bevans has become a local celebrity and a poster girl for healthy living.
“I was out to a restaurant in Moncton and I was recognized so I tried not to eat too much!”
Bevans still remembers a time when she never left the house.
“You are walking around and people are looking at you like what is the matter with her and you feel that.”
Now, she inspires people wherever she goes.
