Vancouver teen hopes to study at prestigious U.S. music school

An 18-year-old Vancouver high school student is hoping to raise thousands to pursue her dream of becoming a world-class pianist.

Carmen Cheung showed an extraordinary skill on piano from a young age. She started studying at the Sarah McLachlan School of Music, a charity that offers free music education to youth who are at-risk or under served.

Cheung applied to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, and was accepted. The problem? The tuition is $35,000 annually, plus living expenses for a total of $60,000-$70,000 per year. She would need to attend the school for four years. Cheung plans to teach piano to youth in a similar situation to her own once she completes the program.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Her high school generously gave her a $6,000 scholarship, but it’s not nearly enough to cover the expense of Berklee. The Sarah McLachlan School of Music is hoping British Columbians will generously offer to help Carmen.
