Two men shot at party in SW Calgary

At approximately 3:25 a.m., on Saturday, May 31, 2014, police were called to reports of shots being fired outside 8 Weapons Fitness and MMA training centre in the 2400 block of 10 Avenue S.W. Global News

Calgary Police are investigating a double shooting early Saturday morning in the city’s southwest, just east of the Shaganappi Pointe Golf Course.

Police were called around 3:30 a.m. to a party at a gym in the 2300 block of 10 Avenue SW, after gunfire erupted outside.

“Some of the guys said they heard fireworks,” says Sheldon Merrick, owner of 8 Weapons Fitness. He was hosting a private birthday party for a family member at the facility.

“Pretty much a lot of people started showing up that weren’t invited,” says Merrick. “I guess there was a brawl just outside … right away we just kind of got everybody out, everybody panicked.”

Police officers did not find any victims at the scene. Just after 3:30 a.m. police received a call informing them that two men had been admitted to hospital with gunshot wounds. One of the men arrived in a car, the other in a taxi cab.

Police say a man between 25 and 30-years-old remains in critical condition. A 21-year-old man suffered minor injuries.

Detectives have yet to speak with either victim. Investigators say the scene was chaotic when they arrived. They gathered as many witnesses as they could to be interviewed, and brought in a city bus to hold them.

At this point, police have no suspects. The investigation is ongoing.
