TORONTO – Friends and a family are reportedly in a state of shock after the driver of a vehicle that crashed and killed their son last year has escaped criminal charges.
Five teens went flying off the road in March of 2013 when the vehicle they were in went through a guard rail traveling on Lakeshore Blvd. E. and into the Don River.
Four of the teens managed to escape the wreckage but 16-year-old AJ Blugerman was trapped in the back seat for more than 40 minutes and was pronounced dead later that night.
The teenage driver, who was 16 at the time and cannot be named, had faced charges including dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death and criminal negligence causing death.
On Thursday, the crown accepted lesser charges of careless driving which means instead of jail time, he faces a $1,000 fine and a year long license suspension along with probation.
