NEW DELHI – A private bus has plunged off a mountain road in northern India, killing 17 people and injuring five others.

Police say the bus was travelling overnight in the Himalayan foothill state of Uttarakhand when it fell 300 metres (1,000 feet) and smashed into pieces at the bottom of a gorge in Chamoli district. The bus was travelling from Rishikesh, and was about a half-kilometre (quarter-mile) from its destination in Ghat.

Disaster management official Nand Kishore told Press Trust of India that 15 passengers were killed instantly in the accident before dawn Saturday. Two others died later from their injuries.

Five other injured people were being treated at an area hospital. There was no one else on board.
