Fuel tanker threatens city sewer system

A tanker truck carrying diesel crashes very close to a city sewer grate. Global News

Seven thousand litres of diesel fuel lies dangerously close to the city’s sewer system tonight.

Environmental experts are on scene now trying to figure out the best way to unload the fuel off a tanker that crashed in the city’s industrial area.

Just before 6:30 p.m. Monday a tanker truck rolled on the corner of Henderson Drive and Pettigrew Avenue, ending up on its side.

The deputy fire chief says an extremely small amount of fuel was spilled, but didn’t trickle into a very nearby sewer grate.

Both roads remain closed, and fire crews will stay on scene to protect the sewer system until the company responsible can siphon all fuel safely out of the truck so it can be righted.

Police have charged the driver of the truck with driving at a speed greater than reasonable and safe under the traffic safety act.
