Arson squad investigates 3 suspicious overnight fires

MONTREAL – Montreal police are investigating three overnight fires early Monday morning.

One of the fires was in the city’s Sud-Ouest borough.

The other two were in Rivière-des-Prairies.

The arson squad is on all three scenes, but has yet to determine if the fires are connected.

At 11:20 p.m., police received a 911 call about a fire on Laprairie street near Saint-Patrick in the Sud-Ouest.

Soon after at 12:30 a.m. in Rivière-des-Prairies, police received several phone calls reporting that a vehicle was on fire in a driveway on Pierre-Baillargeon avenue near Albert-Chamberland street.

“Police officers think there was a fire object that was thrown to the vehicle,” said Simon Delorme of the Montreal police.

The third fire – also a car in a driveway in RDP – was called in at 2:15 a.m.

Witnesses told police that the car exploded, then caught fire.

Police increased patrol in the area shortly after, but admit it is still too soon to tell if the fires are connected.

“It is too early in the investigation to establish a link,” Delorme said.

“There are different actions in place now by supervisors to have patrols in the borough and around the neighbourhood.”

No one was injured in any of the incidents.
