WATCH: Raw video of firefighters tackling the blaze in Old Montreal
MONTREAL – An investigation into a fire that gutted a six-storey building in Old Montreal has been turned over to the arson squad.
The fire started in the upper floors of a building at 31 St. Jacques Street just after midnight on Friday.
“Slowly, each floor began to burn,” said Ian Ritchie, the head of Montreal fire operations.
“Because the fire was on the upper floors, all the ashes and the embers were falling down because of the holes in the floors.”
This was the third fire to take place in the building, which was undergoing renovations after a fire three months ago. There was another blaze in the building in November 2012.
Damage was estimated to be pegged at hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
