UPDATE: On Monday, May 11th, 2014 Ken Hughes announced he no longer planned to run in the PC leadership race.
CALGARY – MLA Ken Hughes became the first to officially enter the PC leadership race on Friday.
He made the announcement at a gathering in his former hometown of Longview, Alberta.
“My focus will be on building a team that will be principled, prudent and practical,” said Hughes.
Hughes had stated on Monday he would be stepping down from his cabinet position, and had previously said he was contemplating running for the leadership of the Progressive Conservative party.
He even launched a website to gauge public support before officially throwing his hat in the ring.
“We need to get back to the basics in some respects, providing solid services based on prudent spending priorities, while focusing on investing in the right places,” added Hughes. “We should not be scared of investing in a great future for our province. However, at the same time, we need to do so with a tremendous amount of discipline.”
Ken Hughes was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for Calgary-West in April, 2012. He was named Minister of Municipal Affairs in December of 2013.
Hughes will be travelling the Province, speaking to Albertans in five communities.
The party is to vote on a new leader in September.
