EDMONTON – A seven-year-old girl had to be rushed to hospital after the Volkswagen Beetle she was in was reportedly rear-ended by a 45-person charter bus at a stop light.
It happened at Manning Dr. northbound at 167 Ave. at about 4 p.m. Tuesday.
“Basically…the Volkswagen was sitting at the intersection, and it was struck from behind by the coach bus,” said Sgt. Curtis Hoople.
There were no passengers on the bus at the time.
Investigators aren’t sure yet how fast the bus was going when it hit the vehicle; but the car could be seen in the middle of the intersection facing southwest following the crash.
The young girl who was injured was sitting in the backseat when the car was struck. She has been taken to the Stollery Children’s Hospital with what police say are critical injuries.
“We actually assisted with that transport by having some police units clear intersections and escort that ambulance to the hospital,” said Hoope.
Police shut down north and southbound traffic on Manning Dr. as they continued to investigate the crash.
Motorists heading north on Manning Dr. were being re-routed at 153 Ave., while southbound travellers were being re-routed onto 167 Ave.
The detours remained in effect until almost 10:30 p.m.
