Investigation launched after police officer accidentally fires gun

CALGARY- An investigation has been launched after a Calgary police officer unintentionally discharged a loaded firearm.

It happened near 41 St. and 17 Ave. S.E. just west of Pierson’s Funeral Home on Monday morning, after police responded to a weapons-related call inside a house.

A police officer who has been with the CPS for five years was doing containment at the scene, when his service-issued gun went off.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“One shot was fired immediately into the ground in front of that officer,” explained Kevin Brookwell from the CPS.

Fortunately no one was injured, and there was just minor property damage.

“As a standard protocol, what happens is homicide automatically comes out to investigate the matter, as well as our professional standards section,” Brookwell explained. “The weapon has been seized, and the inspection of the weapon is part of the investigation.”

While no firm numbers were immediately available, the CPS says incidents of unintentional weapon discharges only happen once every few years.
