City fields complaints about messy construction crews

CALGARY- People who move into new communities expect to put up with some building headaches, but residents in Mahogany complain the construction chaos is becoming too much to bear.

Blair Courchene recently bought a home in the southeast neighbourhood, and is surrounded by new construction projects. He says he expected it to be messy, but didn’t anticipate all the garbage and debris left behind by crews that is littering the streets. Recently, his tire was punctured by a piece of sheet metal.

“We’ve come across a few sheets of nails just walking our dog at night,” Courchene complains. “When it’s dark and you can’t see anything, it’s dangerous.

“You’ve got to be conscious of the people living around here. I understand that they have a job to do, but there are still people that are living here with kids and animals…so our rule is just clean up the site after you leave.”

The city says there are bylaws that builders have to follow, which includes keeping construction materials on job sites and off the streets.

“A piece of lumber or a piece of sheet metal just doesn’t accidently end up on the roadway,” says Kevin Leitch from Calgary Bylaw Services. “Chances are someone has had to get it out of the way to do that, and they can’t do that. They have to keep it on their property.”

Crews caught littering don’t face fines immediately, as bylaw officers initially try to warn and educate workers. However, if it continues the city will clean up and bill them.

Anyone who wants to file a complaint about a construction crews is asked to take photos and call 311.
