WINNIPEG – A blizzard warning is in effect in part of Manitoba as March goes out like a lion at the end of an exceptionally cold winter.

The Steinbach and Morden/Winkler areas are under a blizzard warning on Monday morning, while a snowfall warning is in effect in Sprague, the Whiteshell, Lac du Bonnet and Pinawa. Parts of western Ontario, including Kenora, are under a winter storm warning.

Snow and blowing snow had edged into the southern Red River Valley and the Sprague region by 10:30 a.m., Environment Canada warned.

“The snow and blowing snow will continue to intensify this morning, giving blizzard conditions to the southern Red River Valley,” the warning said at 10:30 a.m. “Visibilities will be near zero at times, mostly towards the international border.”

The Sprague region will get 15-25 cm of snow, while areas away from the international border will get 5 cm, Environment Canada said. Steinbach is expected to get about 15 cm of snow, while the Whiteshell south of the Trans-Canada Highway should get 10 cm.
