Calgarians seek compensation from city for March melt damage

CALGARY – Some homeowners are filing damage claims after this month’s big snow melt, saying the City of Calgary failed to properly clear ice buildup that clogged storm drains and flooded city streets.

Kyle Dobson is among those who have filed a claim.

He came home last week to find a stream of water from his back alley running through his yard, down his window wells and into his basement.

Dobson says the water had been redirected by an ice dam which formed in their alley.

His insurance adjuster said because it’s overland flooding it isn’t covered, but suggested he and his wife file a claim with the city.

“If it comes in from the alley because it hasn’t been cleared [by the City of Calgary] and it causes private property damage… is that the home owner’s responsibility?” asks Kyle. “Or is there a mechanism with the city to pay us for that, or help us out with that damage?”

A claims adjuster will be inspecting the area next week to determine if the city is liable for the damage, which depends on where the water was coming from and how the ice jam was created.

The roads department says they don’t clear ice or snow in back alleys unless city crews can’t get through to do their work.
