WINNIPEG – The Red River Floodway expansion project cost $38 million less than budgeted and the savings will go to other flood protection, the provincial and federal governments said Tuesday.

The improvements increased the diversion channel’s capacity to 4,000 cubic metres from 1,700 cubic metres. The improvements mean Winnipeg, West St. Paul and East St. Paul are protected from a one-in-700-year flood, the province said; the previous capacity protected the communities from a one-in-90-year flood.

Brandon will get $27 million in improvements to flood protection and another $14.85 million will be used to convert temporary flood protection to permanent infrastructure in seven communities. Further details will be released in the coming months, provincial officials said.
