TORONTO — Superstar Celine Dion has revealed she was a victim of schoolyard bullying as a child.

In a video message recorded for an anti-bullying campaign in her native Quebec, the singer said she understands what children who are bullied go through.

“A child shouldn’t be scared to go to school,” she said. “Fear can destroy dreams.”

In the French-language video posted Thursday, Dion said parents can lose hope when they don’t see the light or joy in their child’s eyes because the child doesn’t have friends at school.

Dion, 45, is the mother of 13-year-old René-Charles and three-year-old twins Eddy and Nelson.

She ends the video by raising her hand in front of her face. “I say no to bullying.”

The video is part of a province-wide campaign to reduce and prevent bullying and violence, organized by Fondation Jasmin Roy.

The project includes a tool-kit for schools that is designed to inform and train educators on how to identity and deal with bullying. There are also manuals produced specifically for students and their families that include tools and resources.

The tool-kit is available from Fondation Jasmine Roy for $99.

Hydro-Québec is contributing $50,000 a year over the next three years to put three tool-kits into every public high school in the province.
