Six people taken to hospital after a serious crash on Highway 1

West Vancouver Police say impaired driving is likely to blame for a serious crash on the Upper Levels Highway that sent six people to hospital. They will be recommending charges of impaired driving causing bodily harm and dangerous driving against the driver.

Just after 7 p.m. Wednesday night, witnesses reported seeing a white panel van heading east in the westbound lanes of Highway 1.

Moments later, it collided with two other vehicles near the Capilano River Bridge. One of those vehicles, a mini-van, was carrying a family of four, who were all taken to hospital.

A two-and-a-half year old girl who was riding in the mini-van has now undergone surgery for a shoulder fracture.

The driver of the panel van has more serious injuries, and remains in hospital. West Vancouver Police are now considering several charges against the driver. Police say her seven-year-old sister and parents did not suffer significant injury. The driver and sole occupant of the third vehicle, a 47-year-old Burnaby man, was also uninjured.

Police say it is amazing no one was killed.

Investigators are trying to understand what led to the crash. They say the ramps are well marked and proper signage was in place.

Police are investigating impaired driving as a suspected contributing factor.

Westbound lanes were closed for nearly three hours, snarling traffic for drivers on the North Shore.

The driver of the van, a 47-year-old Nanaimo man, was arrested at hospital and released on a promise to appear at North Vancouver Provincial Court in June.

West Vancouver Police have spoken with over 30 people about this investigation, however, anyone who may have more information is asked to contact West Vancouver Police at 604-925-7300.
