KELOWNA — Investigators are looking in to whether a frosted windshield played a role in Wednesday morning’s crash that sent three young Kelowna students to hospital.
The three female students were crossing Gertsmar Road at Graham Road in Rutland when they were struck by a car driving southbound on Gertsmar.
The impact dented the car’s hood and shattered the windshield.
Witnesses say all three victims were sent flying into the air before landing on the pavement. Their injuries are said to range from minor to serious, but non life-threatening.
Some of the victim’s parents tended to their children at the scene.
The driver of the car was visibly shaken but not hurt.
Police say the car’s windshield was covered with frost at the time of the impact.
“We know that we had the sunlight out this morning but there’s also the possibility that there was some frosting of the window that may have contributed to the driver’s inability to see the individuals on the roadway,” says RCMP Cst. Steve Holmes.
There were no skid marks leading up to where the impact occurred.
Police say the driver will likely face charges.
Area residents say they’re not surprised by the collision.
They say students use the intersection all the time and it needs a crosswalk.
“This is an absolutely horrific intersection,” says resident Sarah Bosma. “We need a crosswalk or something. So many kids use this intersection. You’re in the vicinity of three schools.”
