Family and friends still don’t know what provoked the attack, and more importantly, who is responsible.

Smith was found with a gunshot wound to his head.

“When that happened, I was shocked. I think the whole town was shocked that that would happen,” says Rick Mackie, a long-time friend of Smith.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

People in Hedley say Smith was a friendly man, with no known enemies.

Mackie says some people believe he suffered from drug demons.

Smith’s former partner of seven years, who wants to remain anonymous, says he had an addiction to prescription pain medication — not street drugs.

RCMP are asking anyone who have not spoken to police but had contact with Smith on the days before his death, to contact CRIMESTOPPERS.
