Mixed feelings about Redmen name change

Watch the video above: School team name change not sitting well with most students

SASKATOON – It’s official, the Bedford Road Collegiate Redmen name and logo will be retired. The decision came down Tuesday night at a Saskatoon Public School Board meeting.

It’s a decision sitting well with some students, but not with others.

“I expected the outcome we had and certainly it wasn’t unanimous that was expected as well,” said Ray Morrison, Saskatoon Public Schools board chair.

Bedford Road is the second oldest school in Saskatoon, the Redmen name and logo carries decades of history.

“Lots of our students are disappointed with the decision knowing that they have a deep affinity and love for the name and logo,” said Cody Hanke, Bedford Road Collegiate principal.

The name and logo will change but the history will live on.

“Bedford has a rich history and tradition of contributing to this city and we do not want to lose that, we have said those things that are in Bedford’s past all of that history needs to stay,” said Morrison.

A lot of conversation needs to happen before changes are implemented but Hanke says he will be putting trust in his students to sculpt a new name and logo.

“That new name and new logo whatever it looks like they’re tasked to make sure the spirit gets infused into it,” said Hanke.

The school board will cover the costs of any changes.

An administrative team will help Bedford Road move forward and to have a new name and logo in place by the fall.

Other center’s have been watching Bedford Road’s situation, including Regina’s Balfour Collegiate ‘Redmen’.
