CBE bows to pressure over relocation of Spanish students

CALGARY- Parents who fought the Calgary Board of Education over its initial decision to relocate a Spanish bilingual program, have reason to celebrate.

The board has accepted their proposal to move over 300 children from crowded Westgate Elementary to Glenmeadows school, which will soon be vacated by the charter school that’s currently housed there.

The original plan would have seen the students moved to Eugene Coste School, which is much further away.

Parents say they’re thrilled that the website, petitions and protests they organized paid off.

“They’re not going to be spending an extra hour or two on the bus everyday, and all the kids get to stay together within our community,” says parent Carla Crewes. “They found a solution…which I think works for the majority of families.”

The move should happen in September 2015, freeing up space for the French immersion program at Westgate.
