REGINA – Hockey is one of Canada’s most treasured sports, and in January, Reginans Andrew Wahba and Monica Pukas took the game to northern India.

Before Wahba and Pukas arrived, dozens of underprivileged children were using broken sticks and worn out skates. At night, they would take turns hauling buckets of water from the river to flood the ice.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

That’s when Wahba stepped in.

After months of gathering sticks, protective gear, and used skates from people of Saskatchewan, over 500 kilograms of hockey equipment was shipped to a remote village in Lai.

“The day the equipment arrived, it was similar to finishing your final exams – it was all done,” said Wahba.

While their six-week trip is over, Wahba knows there’s still more work to be done.

“I’m always looking for different opportunities to help out different organizations or programs that are out there – but this was a great experience for us,” said Wahba.
