There are some big changes in store for the thousands of people across B.C. who own off-road vehicles (ORVs).
The provincial government has introduced legislation that will require ORV owners to register their vehicles.
The Off-Road Vehicle Act would establish a one-time registration system that would tie in with ICBC’s vehicle registry.
Off-road vehicles would be required to display a clearly visible numbered plate, before they could be operated on Crown or public land.
The government says the act would help police target the small number of irresponsible ORV owners, and would increase the maximum fine from $500 to $5,000.
“It’s good news for the riders of off-road vehicles, such as quads, snowmobiles, dirt bikes, because they will have improved safety standards, which they will be required to adhere to,” said Jeremy McCall from the Outdoor Recreation Council of B.C. “Such as defining who are young riders, and at what ages they will be allowed to ride. Such as safety helmets being required for many of those off-road vehicles.”
