TORONTO — In addition to being a prolific writer and director, Harold Ramis — who died Monday at 69 — starred in some classic comedy films.

Often, he appeared on screen with Canadian talent.

In the late ’70s he played various characters on the made-in-Ontario comedy series SCTV opposite Canadians like Eugene Levy, Martin Short, Dave Thomas and Catherine O’Hara.

Ramis made the jump to the big screen with a role in 1981’s Stripes, co-starring Toronto’s John Candy. He followed with the role of Dr. Egon Spengler opposite Ontario’s Dan Aykroyd in 1984’s Ghostbusters (directed by Canada’s Ivan Reitman) and its 1989 sequel.

In 2007’s Knocked Up, he played B.C. native Seth Rogen’s father.

Ramis had a small role in 2009’s Year One (which he directed), starring Ontario-born stars Michael Cera and Oliver Platt.

When he directed films, Ramis frequently cast his Canadian friends — such as Levy and Rick Moranis in 1986’s Club Paradise, Levy in 1996’s Multiplicity and Rick Ducommun in 1993’s Groundhog Day.
