WINNIPEG – Police say they’ve identified the driver responsible for a hair-raising near-miss on an Ontario highway, recorded on a Winnipeg trucker’s dashboard camera.
In a news release Thursday Ontario Provincial Police say a 31-year-old man from Milton, Ont., is facing charges in the Jan. 4 incident on Highway 11. A tractor-trailer pulled out to pass a snowplow, directly in the path of a truck driven by Art Ginter from Winnipeg.
Ginter’s dash camera recorded the terrifying scene as he just barely managed to squeeze his truck past the oncoming rig. Ginter’s truck smashed over some guard rail posts, causing significant damage. Ginter can be heard screaming “What the hell are you doing?” and “No!” The driver of the other truck didn’t stop.
Ginter and his wife posted video of the incident on YouTube, hoping it would help identify the other trucker. The video went viral, viewed more than a million times and repeated on TV news programs.
The tactic appears to have succeeded, though police don’t say exactly how the truck driver was identified. Police said his name won’t be released until charges are formally laid. Charges are expected under the province’s Highway Traffic Act, which are not criminal charges.
“It was obvious from the video, which has garnered a lot of attention from social media sites, that this incident could have easily resulted in much more tragic circumstances. I am proud of the dedicated work from the members of this detachment that resulted in the successful conclusion of this investigation and grateful for the concern this case has received from the public,” OPP Staff Sgt. Randy Bye is quoted in a news release Thursday.
