EDMONTON – Four people remain in hospital Tuesday afternoon, after an early morning apartment fire in east Edmonton.
Two infants were among a group of eight people who initially required medical attention after the fire broke out at 4:50 a.m. on Rundle Drive.
“At this time I’m not sure what their conditions are. I know one that was having a really tough time breathing, said Captain Westfall, Edmonton Fire Rescue. “We had to take some out by the latter from upstairs. They were trapped upstairs.”
The blaze started inside of a kitchen in a townhouse complex in Rundle Heights at 106 Avenue near 34 Street.
“Just a lot of smoke, so that’s why I sent two crews in right away,” said Captain Westfall.
One of the people who received medical attention is a neighbour who injured an ankle after kicking in a door to the home that was effected by the fire.
“He didn’t bring anybody out, but he did kick in the door and was yelling,” explained Captain Westfall.
Firefighters were on scene at 4:56 a.m., and the fire was declared out at 5:27 a.m.
On Tuesday afternoon, Edmonton Fire Rescue investigators determined that the fire began in the kitchen of an apartment, and was caused by a pot of oil overheating on the stove.
The Red Cross will be providing assistance to one of the affected families by helping with food, shelter and clothing for the two adults and infant.
