MONTREAL – The Quebec coroner’s office has confirmed the identity of the woman who died in a tragic accident in the Montreal metro on Thursday.
She was Naima Rharouity, a 47-year-old of Moroccan descent and a mother of two.
Rharouity was discovered unconscious at the bottom of an escalator in the Fabre metro station on Thursday morning.
Police said that she appeared to have choked to death after her scarf was caught in the escalator.
A local organization that works with newcomers and families in the neighbourhood of Villeray posted a message of sympathy on Facebook early Friday morning.

“We heard with great sadness of the death of Madame Naima Rhertouity . . . condolences to her family and friends.”
A spokesperson for the organization told Global News that Rharouity took part in activities with Projet Villeray and also took French classes at Petites Mains.
Geneviève Guilbault from the coroner’s office said that an autopsy would be conducted on Friday.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death has been launched.
Guilbault confirmed that the coroner’s office would be working closely with the Montreal police department and the Régie du bâtiment du Québec.
