SASKATOON – Coyotes are becoming common in Saskatoon.

Jonathan Mitchell and his family have lived on the east side of the city for over seven years. For the first time they’ve seen two different coyotes in less than a week in their backyard this year.

“The first one was pretty friendly and you could get closer to him, the second one, who was bigger, when I came after him I was making lots of noise he ran pretty quick, I probably got within 10 feet only because he was in a corner, once I chased him he was gone,” said Mitchell.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Mitchell has three children under five-years-old and having these animals visit his yard has him more than concerned.

He hasn’t been the only one; the city has been receiving plenty of calls.

“Coyotes do very well in close association with people, they like it when we clear habitat, some of our large naturalized parks are very good habitat for them, so they can hunt and meet all of their needs in those parks,” said Jeff Boone, the city’s pest management supervisor.

“So it’s quite common to see them in all major municipalities’ right across North America.”
