SASKATOON – The city is warning residents of increased coyote sightings throughout Saskatoon.

People are asked to keep their distance from coyotes and other wildlife as they can be unpredictable.

None of the recent sightings have resulted in a physical encounter with the animal.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

While coyotes are common in all major municipalities across Canada, it is unusual for the animal to enter residential areas.

Here is what to do if you have a close encounter with a coyote:

  • Never approach the animal
  • Look for an exit
  • Be observant of the coyote’s movement
  • Make noise so it maintains a healthy respect for humans
  • Give the animal an escape route to flee the situation

To avoid confrontations, residents are asked not to leave food out, seal off access to yards and ensure fencing is in good condition.
